New Nashville Predators forward Jonathan Marchessault shared heartbreaking news during his jersey retirement ceremony with the Quebec Remparts.
Marchessault had an impressive junior career in the QMJHL, scoring 239 points in 254 games from 2007 to 2011. His jersey retirement was a well-deserved honor.
However, just before the ceremony, he revealed in an interview that his mother, Lesly Marchessault, passed away just 24 hours prior. Here's what he said in French, translated to English:
"It's difficult. I learned that I lost my mother yesterday morning. It's been 24 hours, so it's very difficult not only for me but for my entire family.
Anyone who knew my mother knows that a moment like the one today would have been one of the best moments of her entire life.
That's what is so sad. She would have really loved to see it, to see her name raised to the top of the
Videotron Centre . She was so good to me, she was incredible. It's horrible. It's part of life. She would have wanted us to be here as a family, so that's why we went through with it."
During the ceremony, he also said:
"Lesly, you left us this week. Mom, you were my first fan. I could always count on your support.
She attended all my games with the Remparts. I know you're with us tonight to celebrate this milestone. Thank you, I love you."

Losing a parent is one of life's toughest challenges, and we commend Marchessault and his family for honoring this milestone amid their grief. This adds a somber note to his first season with the Nashville Predators, just weeks before the season starts. Our thoughts are with him and his family.
