On May 30th the Washington Capitals announced they had hired Spencer Carbery as their new head coach.
Carbery prior to getting the head coaching gig in Washington was an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. This will be the first NHL head coaching stint for the 41-year-old Carbery. Since the beginning of training camp one specific player is already a big fan of his new head coach.
In a media availability today with Evgeny Kuznetsov he was asked about Spencer Carbery and his initial thoughts.
It sounds as though the Washington Capitals will lean into the offensive side of the game under Carbery. With one of the best goalscorers of all time in Alex Ovechkin and several other highly skilled forwards, this feels like a no-brainer play style.
If the Capitals are able to play this style effectively we might see an offensive resurgence from several of their players. As Ovechkin chases down Wayne Gretzky for the NHL all-time goals record an offensive style is always helpful. As the season gets underway the Capitals will be watched closely for improvement under Carbery.
