The Washington Capitals are trying to get back to the mountain top of winning a Stanley Cup. After struggling in 2022-23 the Capitals made a coaching change. Today one of the Capitals' key players spoke about the new bench boss.

New Coach Comes To Washington

On May 30th the Washington Capitals announced they had hired Spencer Carbery as their new head coach.

This will not come as a huge surprise to many, but hearing Washington is closing in on Spencer Carbery as its next head coach.

Carbery prior to getting the head coaching gig in Washington was an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. This will be the first NHL head coaching stint for the 41-year-old Carbery. Since the beginning of training camp one specific player is already a big fan of his new head coach.

Kuznetsov Comments On His New Head Coach

In a media availability today with Evgeny Kuznetsov he was asked about Spencer Carbery and his initial thoughts.

«The way he sees hockey, it's perfect match for me and a perfect match for guys inside the team,» Kuznetsov said of Carbery. «I'm looking for that, for sure: that coach that's gonna ask to create more, to ask to score some goals, to ask to hold on to that puck, to ask to skate with that puck.»

It sounds as though the Washington Capitals will lean into the offensive side of the game under Carbery. With one of the best goalscorers of all time in Alex Ovechkin and several other highly skilled forwards, this feels like a no-brainer play style.

If the Capitals are able to play this style effectively we might see an offensive resurgence from several of their players. As Ovechkin chases down Wayne Gretzky for the NHL all-time goals record an offensive style is always helpful. As the season gets underway the Capitals will be watched closely for improvement under Carbery.
