Weegar, 30, is coming off of a career season for the Flames in which he scored 20 goals, and 52 points in 82 games, great numbers for a player whose team missed the playoffs last season.
Due to his career year, Weegar seems to be drawing trade interest from around the league, and the New York Rangers seem to have an offer in place for the star defensemen.
As the post mentions, Kaapo Kakko would be one piece moving to Calgary, but the big question mark is Rangers defensemen Jacob Trouba, who has been surrounded by trade rumours and buyout talk for months now. The rangers would need to clear out his cap hit in order to make this trade work.
Trouba was rumoured to have been linked to the Detroit Red Wings around the NHL draft, but nothing transpired.
It will be quite interesting to see how these events transpire, as Weegar is a huge upgrade over Trouba, and Calgary has seemingly committed to a full blown rebuild, making the reality of this trade more likely than it may appear.
