Jagr, owner and player of the Kladno Knights in Czechia, could lose his team as he fell behind on some payments.
The former Pittsburgh Penguins legend announced his official retirement from hockey earlier this year, confirming that this season, his 37th, will be his last. Jagr didn't only bring his skills to the ice, but he also brought a lot of attention to the team, attracting fans to games simply with his presence.
Unfortunately, off the ice, things aren't going too well for Jagr. Despite earning over $180 million in his career according to PuckPedia, he's falling behind on payments and the city of Kladno canceled the team's arena lease. According to reports, Jagr and the team failed to pay a six-month lease payment. The city also confirmed that Jagr asked to extend the deadline, but stopped talking to them right after, thus making negotiations impossible, leaving the city no choice but to cancel the lease.
The mayor of Kladno, Milan Volf, a former player for the Knights, shared comments on social media, expressing frustration and disappointment about the dispute. He went as far as suggesting that Jagr shouldn't be in charge of hockey in Kladno anymore:
The franchise relies a lot on Jagr, and now, the team will find itself homeless, putting doubts on the future of the team.
As of now, fans are still waiting to see what's going to happen to the team. But with Jagr's playing career coming to an end, there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding what's coming for the Knights organization.
