The New Jersey Devils AHL affiliate couldn't have started their new season any worse, and now, they're making a massive change behind the bench.

The Utica Comets have been a team struggling for success in the playoffs in the past few years, and now their start to the season has been the final straw for the New Jersey Devils organization. After an 0-8-1 start through nine games to begin the new season, the team have now released a statement on social media that they have fired Head Coach Kevin Dineen.

«Unfortunately, after the start we had to this season, the organization felt it was time to make a change while the season is still young,» said Utica GM Dan MacKinnon. «We thank Kevin for his time with Utica and wish him and his family all the best moving forward.»

The move comes after three seasons of Dineen in charge, and after starting his tenure with an AHL record 13 straight wins to start a year, the wheels have now completely fallen off, with the team anointing 37-year old Ryan Parent as their new Head Coach.

"In his seven years with our AHL affiliate, Ryan Parent has established a track record of transparently communicating with young players and teaching good habits, while drawing on his own playing experiences," said MacKinnon. "Those characteristics will serve him well in this new role where he will need to develop, lead, and relate to players at all different stages of their pro hockey careers."

At 61-years of age, it's unclear what the future holds for Dineen, who played just under 1,200 NHL games throughout his career, but after just one stint in the NHL as an assistant, it's unclear if he'll have interest from teams in a return to the top league. While it's always tough to see a coach fired, no wins through 9 games is simply too tough to ignore, so while Dineen has the track record in the AHL, it was just too much to overlook, and now the team look to turn things around after his departure.
