Over his career, John Tortorella earned quite a reputation. He's known for his old-school tactics with players, and his antics with the media. Despite all this, he remains one of the most respected coaches in the NHL. Why? Because he usually gets results.
However, this season, things haven't turned his way yet. The Philadelphia Flyers are currently at the last spot in the Metropolitan Division, with a 4-8-1 record. We're far from what we saw last season when the team caused a surprise and nearly clinched a playoff spot.
Frustration is slowly boiling over in Philadelphia, and Tortorella let it show in last night's post-game press conference. After the tough loss against the Carolina Hurricanes, Tortorella met with reporters for only 25 seconds, answering questions with only a few cold words.
Being in the NHL comes with responsibilities. All team members, either coaches or players, must be professional, especially with the media. I get that it can be harder to do for some people when they aren't happy with their team's results, but such behavior isn't good for anybody. Fans, players, and reporters don't like seeing this.
The Flyers will be back in action tomorrow against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Unless we see different results for the Flyers, don't expect to see the coach change his attitude with the media.
The last time both teams met on the ice, back in March, Tortorella received a two-game suspension for refusing to leave after being ejected from the game. He will surely try to keep his composure this time.
