This past week, the San Jose Sharks made the surprise move to trade for Timothy Liljegren with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and with a fun young D-core around him, they've now made another move. According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, the Sharks have now officially waived veteran blue liner Lucas Carlsson, who joined the team in the off-season after spending the last three years of his career in the Florida Panthers organization.
At 27-years of age, Carlsson has struggled to consistently crack an NHL roster, with Chicago, Florida and San Jose all opting to not give him a significant run on their team, and now, his career in the league is at a cross roads. Carlsson was originally a fourth-round pick back in the 2016 NHL Draft, and since that point he has skated in just 60 NHL games, with a career high of 40 back in 2021/22 with Florida.
In those games, Carlsson has tallied 3 goals and 11 points, but with the size and the defensive mindset to offset that lack of production, many believed he could be an NHL regular. Unfortunately that has simply never happened, and after a third team has now moved on from him, it's unclear if he will ever get to have a major run at the NHL level. With solid experience, there's the potential that a team out there may take a chance on Carlsson as a potential 7th defenseman, but as of right now, that isn't looking likely.
In other waivers news, Max Jones, who was just waived by the Boston Bruins has now cleared and will head to the AHL's Providence Bruins.
