The Toronto Maple Leafs dominated the Boston Bruins by a score of 4-0 on Tuesday night, but in the first period, a melee highlighted what was a one-sided contest between two of the most bitter rivals in the NHL. In that moment, Chris Tanev hit David Pastrnak into the boards from behind, prompting captain Brad Marchand to jump him from behind, sparking a massive scuffle that had to be stopped by the officials.
Given the position that Pastrnak found himself in, it's no surprise that Marchand reacted this way as his star player was clearly in danger, and on social media, there has now been chatter that a suspension should become possible for the Maple Leafs veteran, despite the belief that it may have been Pastrnak's fault.
While others certainly disagree, given that Pastrnak turned into the hit at the last second, putting himself in the dangerous position, it's become a talking point regardless, and given how inconsistent the NHL's Department of Player Safety has become in recent times, it could go either way.
On first look, it appears to be quite the dirty hit, but the last second change from Pastrnak made it very tough for Tanev, who is not known as a dirty player, who was simply trying to make a play. Regardless of who was at fault for the hit becoming as dangerous as it did, everyone appears to be okay coming out of the incident, and now all we can do is simply wait to see if Tanev hears from the NHL's DoPS, who have been known to give out a very surprising suspension in recent years.
