Less than two weeks ago, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid went down early in their matchup with the Columbus Blue Jackets, leaving the game with an ankle injury that many feared could lead to a long-term absence. The latest update from Elliotte Friedman gave a timetable of 2-3 weeks to return, but earlier this week, he would tease a return for this Saturday's game against the Vancouver Canucks, much to the surprise of the media and the fans.
Now, in an even more shocking twist, McDavid is set to return four days earlier than that, as Friedman has revealed that he will be playing on Wednesday night when the Oilers do battle with the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Edmonton Oilers never gave an official date for McDavid's return, so we don't know how improbable this return ultimately became, but given that many believed he would be out for upwards of three weeks, this is a major boost for a team that sits 6-6-1 on the season.
In his absence, Leon Draisaitl has led the way as Edmonton have gone 2-1-0, and if you had of laid that scenario out for Oilers fans after seeing McDavid go down, they would be very excited about the way things played out. While the team showed they are very capable of competing in McDavid's absence, this just isn't as good a team without their superstar forward, who many believe is the best player in the entire NHL.
It's unclear whether or not McDavid will be even close to 100%, but No. 97 at less than that remains one of the best players in the league, and with the chemistry building, if the team can continue growing upon his return, this will be a highly dangerous team once more in 2024/25.
