Evgeny Kuznetsov, a consistent NHL presence for over a decade, has revealed that he is breaking his contract and heading to Europe to join SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL after spending half a year with the Carolina Hurricanes.
While the initial reports were disputed, Frank Seravalli has now confirmed the news, which benefits both the Washington Capitals and the Hurricanes.
According to the insider, this move frees up both teams from paying Kuznetsov, providing them with more cap flexibility. It also likely marks the end of a decorated veteran's NHL career.
Over 743 career games, Kuznetsov scored 173 goals and 575 points, helping the Washington Capitals to their lone Stanley Cup. At 32, he has signed a four-year deal in the KHL. While a return to the NHL is possible, it seems that one of the most consistent players in Capitals history is done with the league for now.
