Once considered one of the league's top players, van Riemsdyk is now facing the possibility of retirement if he doesn't secure a new contract this offseason. However, there's speculation that he could be a PTO candidate for the Colorado Avalanche, a team with Stanley Cup aspirations.
Evan Rawal of Colorado Hockey Now weighed in on the situation:
Van Riemsdyk, drafted 2nd overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2007, has enjoyed a successful career with stints in Philadelphia, Toronto, and Boston. After a solid season with the Bruins, where he scored 38 points in 71 games, he's currently without a contract.
As we await the start of training camps, it remains to be seen whether van Riemsdyk will join a contender like Colorado or find another opportunity to continue his career.
