James van Riemsdyk has had a remarkable NHL career, but at 35 years old, he may need to settle for a PTO (Professional Tryout) this fall as he nears the end of his playing days.

Once considered one of the league's top players, van Riemsdyk is now facing the possibility of retirement if he doesn't secure a new contract this offseason. However, there's speculation that he could be a PTO candidate for the Colorado Avalanche, a team with Stanley Cup aspirations.

Evan Rawal of Colorado Hockey Now weighed in on the situation:

"Does the veteran of over 1,000 games still have anything left in the tank? Could he keep up on the Avalanche? He did put up 38 points last season for the Bruins, so he's got some scoring ability left, but speed is the real question. Any questions you have about him could be answered in training camp on a PTO."

Van Riemsdyk, drafted 2nd overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2007, has enjoyed a successful career with stints in Philadelphia, Toronto, and Boston. After a solid season with the Bruins, where he scored 38 points in 71 games, he's currently without a contract.

As we await the start of training camps, it remains to be seen whether van Riemsdyk will join a contender like Colorado or find another opportunity to continue his career.
