It was revealed that Brandon Sutter has decided to retire from professional hockey.
Sutter signed a PTO earlier this summer, but he had not played a game since the 2020-21 season. His hockey career took a hit when he contracted COVID-19 while playing in Vancouver, and he continued to struggle with lingering symptoms.
Given his challenging circumstances, many assumed that the Oilers had chose to let him go. However, an insider recently revealed that this wasn't the case-Sutter was compelled to retire.
According to a report by Mark Spector, Brandon Sutter initiated a meeting in Seattle with Oilers GM Ken Holland, head coach Jay Woodcroft, and trainer TD Forss, where he informed them that he could not proceed with his PTO.
Although Sutter had appeared promising during his two weeks at the Oilers' training camp and seemed likely to make it to the opening game lineup, the enduring impact of COVID-19 ultimately led to his decision to retire.
While we extend our best wishes to Brandon Sutter in his retirement, we can't help but wish it had come about under different circumstances.
