Leon Draisaitl's contract talks with the Edmonton Oilers have reached a critical point as a deadline looms with the regular season approaching.
Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman has been working closely with Draisaitl on a new deal, with the latest proposal being an 8-year contract worth $13.5 million per year. Both sides are set to meet this week in Edmonton to finalize the agreement. However, there's a firm deadline (September 19th) because Draisaitl has made it clear he doesn't want to negotiate once the season begins.
Currently earning $8.5 million per year, Draisaitl has been a consistent force for the Oilers, tallying 100 or more points in five of the last seven seasons and hitting the 50-goal mark three times. With his elite performance, it's only a matter of time before he's paid like one of the top players in the world.
In related news, it was reported that 10 days after the season ended, Draisaitl, along with Connor McDavid and Evan Bouchard, met with Oilers management to discuss taking slightly less on their next contracts to help build a Stanley Cup-contending team.
