The Nashville Predators addressed a report on Monday that goalie Yaroslav Askarov has requested a trade from the team.
Earlier in the day, ESPN's Kevin Weekes reported that Askarov had informed the team he would not report to the AHL this season and had asked for a trade.
Askarov, who was selected 11th overall in the 2020 draft, has struggled to secure a full-time role with the Predators. This summer, the team signed goaltender Scott Wedgewood to a two-year, $3 million deal, positioning him as the backup to star goalie Juuse Saros.
Last season, Askarov went 30-13-1 with the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals, posting a .911 save percentage and a 2.39 goals-against average. He also appeared in two games for Nashville, going 1-0-0 with a .943 save percentage and a 1.47 GAA on 34 shots faced.
The 22-year-old is signed through this season with a $925,000 cap hit and will become a restricted free agent next July. The Predators solidified Saros as their long-term starter last month, signing him to an eight-year contract extension with an average annual value of $7.74 million.
This off-season, the Predators have focused on building a winning team, signing free agents Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei, as they aim to continue their progress after returning to the playoffs this year, following the end of their eight-year postseason streak in 2023.
