Lou Lamoriello confirmed that Matt Martin has been invited to camp on a professional tryout (PTO), while Cal Clutterbuck won't be returning for his 12th season with the Islanders.
Last season, the 36-year-old Clutterbuck played all 82 regular-season games, scoring seven goals and 19 assists. He also hit some major milestones, including reaching 1,000 NHL games and becoming the first player in NHL history to record 4,000 hits. Though he expressed a desire to keep playing, the Islanders have added players like Anthony Duclair and Maxim Tsyplakov, leaving no clear path for Clutterbuck on the roster. It remains to be seen if he'll try his luck with a PTO somewhere else.
As for Martin, it's likely either Long Island or retirement after accepting his PTO.
Martin, 35, has played 15 NHL seasons, 13 of them with the Islanders. He spent two seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs before being traded back to the Islanders. Martin, Clutterbuck, and Casey Cizikas formed "The Identity Line" under coach Barry Trotz, known for their energy and physicality.
Whether Martin makes the team or not, it's clear that the Islanders are saying goodbye to an era with these two veterans.
