Over the past 18 months, no one has taken the NHL by storm quite in the way of Matt Rempe with the New York Rangers, but after several healthy scratches to start the 2024/25 campaign, as he was sent back to the AHL in a surprising move. Before making his NHL debut a season ago, Rempe had played in just 96 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack, and to become a much more well-rounded player, many in the organization believed a trip back to the AHL would do him some good.
Unfortunately, his return didn't start off in the best way possible, as Bleacher Report writer Adam Herman reveals that Rempe was on the ice for two goals against in his season debut, with his team being outshot 20-5 in that time.
At 6-foot-9 with a keen sense for fighting, it's easy to see why the Rangers wanted to get Rempe in the lineup a season ago as they pushed for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but to be in the NHL now, you need much more than one weapon. In those 96 games, Rempe was actually showing good development towards being a genuine threat on the fourth line, as he tallied 14 goals and 22 points throughout that stretch before being promoted to the NHL.
At just 22-years of age, Rempe has plenty of time to develop his well-rounded game, and with a career high of 17 goals in a season at the WHL level, there's proof that he can become a solid goal scorer. Given his reputation, it's very likely that Rempe won't ever escape the fourth line in the NHL, but if he can use this time to become more well-rounded defensively and develop his game on the offensive end, he could find himself getting more and more minutes in the years to come.
UPDATE
The New York Rangers have surprisingly recalled Matt Rempe from the AHL.
