Starting July 1, Philadelphia Flyers forward Travis Konecny will be eligible for a contract extension.
Konecny, a 2015 first-round pick, has one year left on his six-year, $33 million contract. Over the last five seasons, the 27-year-old has averaged 68 points per 82 games.
Though formal negotiations haven't started, there have been informal talks between the Flyers and Konecny's agent, Pat Morris, known for tough negotiations. Morris might aim for an annual average value (AAV) of $10 million or more, especially if Konecny's production increases next season.
The Flyers are comfortable with an AAV in the $8-$8.5 million range. Comparisons are drawn to Timo Meier, who signed an eight-year, $70.4 million contract with the Devils, averaging around 60 points per 82 games. Konecny's new deal would start when he's 28, making long-term commitment riskier.
The Flyers have depth at Konecny's position, with prospects like Owen Tippett, Tyson Foerster, Bobby Brink, and Samu Tuomaala. The arrival of 2023 first-round pick Matvei Michkov, a right winger, could also influence negotiations.
Despite these factors, a deal is likely. Negotiations have been cordial, and a reasonable estimate for Konecny's new deal would be around $9 million per year, balancing his production, age, and the rising salary cap.
