Auston Matthews, star forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs, is facing uncertainty regarding his availability for Game 5 against the Boston Bruins in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

According to sources familiar with the situation, Matthews is unlikely to take the ice on Tuesday night.

Chris Johnston is reporting the Leafs will likely be without the services of Auston Matthews for Game 5 😬

The uncertainty surrounding Matthews stems from a combination of illness and an undisclosed injury. During Game 4 against the Bruins, Matthews was sidelined for the third period due to illness. Additionally, he is believed to be nursing an injury, further complicating his ability to participate in Game 5.

Matthews has been dealing with an illness that kept him out of the third period in game 4. Johnston in his article for The Athletic says that it is also believed that Matthews is dealing with an undisclosed injury

Despite his efforts to recover, including participating in an optional morning skate, Matthews' status remains uncertain. He was observed engaging in light drills with assistant coach Manny Malhotra but did not exert himself significantly during the session.

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe expressed cautiousness regarding Matthews' potential participation, acknowledging the decision ultimately lies with the team doctors. Keefe emphasized prioritizing the player's health and safety above all else.

Should Matthews be unable to play, it would mark only the second game he's missed throughout the season, with the previous absence attributed to illness. Notably, this would also be the first playoff game missed in Matthews' illustrious eight-year NHL career.

In Matthews' absence, Max Domi has been practicing on the first line alongside Tyler Bertuzzi and Mitch Marner, as well as filling his role on the top power-play unit.

Matthews has been a crucial contributor for the Maple Leafs during the series, tallying three points, including a pivotal goal in Game 2.

As the Maple Leafs face a 3-1 deficit in the best-of-seven series against the Bruins, Matthews' potential absence looms large, posing a significant challenge for Toronto as they seek to extend their playoff run.

The final decision regarding Matthews' availability for Game 5 will be determined by the team's medical staff, with the Maple Leafs hoping for a swift recovery for their star forward.

Stay tuned for more updates.
