TSN's Chris Johnston has confirmed what many suspected about the health of Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews.

Matthews was outstanding in game two of the Leafs' first-round series against the Boston Bruins, contributing two assists and scoring the game-winner in the third period.

However, his performance has declined since then. Worries began when he missed practice before Game 3, and escalated when team doctors pulled him from Game 4 at the end of the second period, and he didn't return for the third.

Matthews sat out Game 5 and has now been ruled out for Game 6. Chris Johnston, from TSN and The Athletic, has confirmed the worst fears - it's more than just an illness.

"What is known is that the 26-year-old played through illness in Games 3 and 4 of the series before suffering an injury on an innocuous hit while playing sick, according to the sources. Team doctors removed Matthews from the lineup during the second intermission of Game 4 and he's been unable to participate in a full team skate since."

We may not know the full extent of his condition until the Leafs are out of the playoffs, but the small bright spot is that Matthews skated for 30 minutes this morning, indicating some progress.

Will Auston Matthews lace up for another game with the Toronto Maple Leafs in these playoffs?
