The Leafs management halted their search for a new coach and decided to hire Craig Berube. The decision was confirmed last week, but just days later, Berube is already facing scrutiny.
During his NHL playing days, Berube was known as an enforcer who often disrupted opponents by any means necessary. However, he crossed the line in a 1997 game.
Berube was suspended for one game for using a racial slur against an opponent.
The Los Angeles Times reported on the incident at the time:
While such behavior is entirely unacceptable today, Berube did apologize and served his suspension. This past incident does not necessarily impact his ability to coach the Toronto Maple Leafs and lead them to a Stanley Cup.
However, any repeat offenses would undoubtedly bring severe consequences, as evidenced by the situation with Edmonton Oilers' assistant coach and NHL legend Paul Coffey, who is currently under investigation for a racist gesture made during a recent game:
Do you think the Toronto Maple Leafs made a mistake by hiring Craig Berube as their head coach?
