Ayres became a sensation during the 2019-20 season when, as a Toronto Maple Leafs zamboni driver, he stepped in as the emergency goalie for the Carolina Hurricanes. That night he stopped 8 of 10 shots helping Carolina defeat the Maple Leafs. His performance earned him an unforgettable reaction from the team & the hockey world.
Since then Ayres hasn't played professional hockey but he remains a popular figure. Now, at 47, he's signed a new contract with the Richmond Hill Coyotes of the OSHL.
For Ayres, this is a big moment as he returns to the ice almost five years after his famous NHL debut at age 42. The Coyotes are hoping his presence will bring both attention & solid goaltending. While it's been a long time since his NHL game the memory of Ayres heroic performance is still fresh & fans are eager to see if he can bring that same magic to the OSHL and help put the Coyotes on the map.
