With speculation that Craig Berube will become the next head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, there's a lot of talk about changes to the rest of the coaching staff. Assistants Guy Boucher, Dean Chynoweth, and Mike Van Ryn, who worked with Sheldon Keefe, might be on their way out.
According to recent reports, Craig Berube might bring former NHL player Marc Savard with him to Toronto. Savard played 807 NHL games between 1997 and 2011 for the New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, Atlanta Thrashers, and Boston Bruins.
Recently, Savard was an assistant coach for the Flames, focusing on the power play. However, this season, Calgary's power play ranked 26th in the NHL with a 17.9% success rate.
On the other hand, the Leafs finished 7th in the league for power plays this season, under Guy Boucher's guidance.
Berube will bring in people he believes can help achieve his goals. He has big decisions to make, but keeping Boucher, who did a great job with the power play, could be a smart move for his first season.
