Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner declined to comment on his future in Toronto when asked by a reporter.

The Toronto Maple Leafs hosted a press conference on Wednesday to officially name Auston Matthews as the new team captain, succeeding John Tavares, who fully supported the decision. The event was attended by former Maple Leafs captains Doug Gilmour and Wendel Clark, as well as current players Morgan Rielly and Mitch Marner.

Marner, who has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the summer, met with the media after the press conference. When asked about his future with the Maple Leafs, Marner chose not to discuss the topic in detail. He expressed his gratitude for being part of the organization and emphasized that the day was meant to celebrate Auston Matthews and John Tavares.

"I'm not going to get into that too much today," Marner said. "I'm just going to say I love being here, I've said that from Day 1. I'm very fortunate and lucky to be a Maple Leaf.

He added, "Today is about these two amazing people."

Marner, 27, has spent his entire NHL career with the Maple Leafs and is entering the final year of his contract. He became eligible to sign an extension in July, but no deal has been reached, leading to ongoing trade rumors. As Marner approaches unrestricted free agency next summer, it remains to be seen if contract talks will take place in the coming weeks to avoid distractions during the season. If an agreement isn't reached, trade rumors are likely to resurface.
