Manning was president of both the Toronto Football Club as well as the Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. Both teams are secondary assets to MLSE, who of course, also own the Toronto Maple Leafs.
This move in itself does not affect the Leafs as Manning was not involved in the organization at all. However, it could signal future changes coming to the Leafs management in the near future. Clearly, MLSE was not happy with the way the Argonauts and TFC were being run. Are they currently satisfied with the way the Leafs are being run? If not, no one with the organization could be safe.
That being said, Argo fans are quite happy with today's move. Pelly is apparently a strong proponent of the team, and fans are viewing this move as one made by someone who cares and wants the team to succeed in the long run.
Similarly, TFC fans are also happy that Manning is gone. Many have not forgiven him for the state he left the team in after making moves that were intended more for monetary gain than actually improving the team.
Its tough to say for sure how Leafs fans are feeling overall right now, so it will be interesting to see how the fanbase reacts if Pelly makes another move. That being said, most of the team's staff should be safe considering they have only gotten there recently.
