Last week, the Carolina Hurricanes placed forward Evgeny Kuznetsov on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a mutual contract termination, as the veteran player was reportedly looking to return to the KHL, particularly with SKA St. Petersburg. However, his agent, Shumi Babayev, revealed that Kuznetsov had received interest from 15 NHL teams and might now consider staying in the NHL.

Pundits, including those at the Hockey Writers, suggest that the Maple Leafs could seize the opportunity to sign Kuznetsov as they seek help with secondary scoring.
Some argue that the Maple Leafs need more depth up front for a longer playoff run in 2025, and Kuznetsov could be a solid option. In 63 games split between Washington and Carolina this past season, Kuznetsov posted eight goals and 16 assists for 24 points. He also added four goals and two assists in 10 playoff games for the Hurricanes.
Kuznetsov has been a controversial figure, especially after the Capitals won the Stanley Cup in 2018, which led to off-ice issues and apparent tension with management. He sought help through the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program after the 2024 NHL All-Star Break and had requested a trade from the Capitals, resulting in his move to the Hurricanes in exchange for a third-round pick, with half of his salary retained.
Despite his past, Kuznetsov remains a strong candidate to boost Toronto's third line, especially if motivated by the star players there. Although reports did not specify if the Maple Leafs were among the 15 clubs showing interest, many fans and pundits have opinions on the matter.
