Throughout the NHL offseason, there have been ongoing rumors about Nicholas Robertson's future with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Early in the summer, reports surfaced that Robertson wanted to be traded.
Now, with the NHL season just weeks away, Nicholas Robertson remains a restricted free agent without a contract. If he truly doesn't plan to sign with the Maple Leafs, a trade seems inevitable. As a result, new trade scenarios are being considered.
One such scenario suggests the Maple Leafs could acquire a former top-10 pick forward.
Stephen Nixon of Editor In Leaf has reported a possible trade between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets.
The Maple Leafs are searching for a trade partner for Nick Robertson, and Nixon believes the Winnipeg Jets could be a perfect fit. The Jets have a prospect, Cole Perfetti, who might benefit from a change of scenery.
Perfetti, a natural center, could fill a need on the Maple Leafs' third line. Over the past two NHL seasons, Perfetti has averaged around 30 points, which is typical for a third-line center on a contending team.
The Jets have depth at center but could use more young talent on the wing. Nick Robertson, when healthy, could be an ideal fit. Last season, Robertson played 56 NHL games and scored 27 points. He may have more potential if given more ice time but comes with some risk.
Since Robertson is the older and less highly-touted prospect, the Maple Leafs might need to add another asset to make the trade happen. However, if the Leafs see untapped potential in Perfetti, it could be worth the extra cost.
With the NHL season approaching, the Maple Leafs are likely to make a move involving Robertson before opening night. A prospect-for-prospect swap like this could be the most logical outcome.
