According to Cap Friendly, the Columbus Blue Jackets placed forward Brendan Gaunce on waivers Sunday, the second time this season. Gaunce has been on the Blue Jackets' NHL roster since March but is also a key player for their AHL team, the Cleveland Monsters.
The Monsters are heading to the Calder Cup's Eastern Conference Final against the Hershey Bears. For Gaunce to play in this important series, he needs to clear waivers.
The timing is interesting because any team still in the race could, in theory, claim Gaunce, but it's unlikely. If claimed, Gaunce couldn't play for another team's roster in the playoffs, as NHL rules require players to be on the roster before the trade deadline to be eligible.
Earlier this year, Gaunce went unclaimed when he was waived. This season, he played 24 NHL games, scoring 2 goals and 2 assists. He spent most of his time with the Monsters, where he scored 19 goals and 20 assists in 46 AHL games.
Gaunce will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
