Jonathan Marchessault, one of the original Vegas Golden Knights and the reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner, is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. He had his best season in 2023-24, setting a new career high in goals and is due for a significant raise from his current $5 million cap hit. However, the Golden Knights couldn't defend their Stanley Cup title, losing to the Dallas Stars in a tough seven-game series in Round 1 of the playoffs.
Recently, Marchessault commented on his contract situation, revealing that there's been no progress on an extension with Vegas.
Marchessault had asked for an extension last summer, preferring to get it done before the season started.
Marchessault also shared his belief that the Golden Knights and Stars were the best teams in the Western Conference and predicted that the Stars would go all the way to the Stanley Cup Final.
While it would be strange to see Marchessault in another team's jersey, the Golden Knights have shown they are willing to make tough decisions when it comes to their players and coaches. Nothing is off the table.
