Star forward Jonathan Marchessault called out the Vegas Golden Knights as he gets set to hit the free agent market on July 1st.

Jonathan Marchessault, one of the original Vegas Golden Knights and the reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner, is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season. He had his best season in 2023-24, setting a new career high in goals and is due for a significant raise from his current $5 million cap hit. However, the Golden Knights couldn't defend their Stanley Cup title, losing to the Dallas Stars in a tough seven-game series in Round 1 of the playoffs.

Recently, Marchessault commented on his contract situation, revealing that there's been no progress on an extension with Vegas.

«We don't have a call yet or anything,» Marschessault explained prior to taking part in the World Series of Poker. «They said they were interested to sign me. They have time until June 30 or so.»

Marchessault had asked for an extension last summer, preferring to get it done before the season started.

«I asked last summer,» Marchessault said about requesting an extension. «I said I would rather do it in the summer before the season. They said they're not ready to do that, and after there's not even a single talk that I've had during the season. I don't know. Technically, as an organization, you've signed a player for six years, right? So you have the full six years and after you can deal with it, so we'll see.»

Marchessault also shared his belief that the Golden Knights and Stars were the best teams in the Western Conference and predicted that the Stars would go all the way to the Stanley Cup Final.

«I still think us and Dallas were the two best teams in the West and the winner of that series was going to make it to the finals,» Marchessault said. «I don't think the other teams in the conference were near our two teams. I think Dallas is going to make it to the finals, and personally I think they're going to win.»

While it would be strange to see Marchessault in another team's jersey, the Golden Knights have shown they are willing to make tough decisions when it comes to their players and coaches. Nothing is off the table.
