Capitals star Alex Ovechkin blames Gary Bettman for his lack of goal scoring

Despite the Washington Capitals struggling in the 2023/24 season, fans had one major highlight: watching captain Alex Ovechkin inch closer to Wayne Gretzky's goal-scoring record. Ovechkin, who has played 61 fewer games than Gretzky, is now just 41 goals away from surpassing the Great One. According to Ovechkin, he would have already broken the record if not for the interruptions caused by Gary Bettman.
Ovechkin's claim holds weight, as he has missed over 70 games due to the pandemic and lockout seasons. Given his goal-scoring pace, he likely would have surpassed Gretzky's record by now. With two or more years likely left in his career, barring any major injuries, he is expected to break the record soon.
While Ovechkin may not be the all-around player Gretzky was, he is widely regarded as the best goal scorer of all time. The only thing left for him is to claim the record. Though not all of this can be blamed on Gary Bettman, it's understandable why Ovechkin feels frustrated. With just 41 goals to go, he might not reach the milestone in the 2024/25 season, but if he stays healthy, Gretzky's record is unlikely to stand for more than another two years.
