The Detroit Red Wings made a tough call on Sunday, placing goaltender Ville Husso on waivers to create some much-needed roster space. The Montreal Canadiens have also placed Alex Barré-Boulet on the waiver wire.

With a $4.75 million contract in the final year, it's hard to see any team claiming him, especially after a clunker in his season debut, lasting just over a period before things went south in a 6-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday.

If he clears, Husso will be in the AHL, manning the crease for the Grand Rapid Griffins. With forward Christian Fischer and defenseman Jeff Petry both sidelined with upper body injuries , the Wings had to make room for Monday's matchup against the reigning Presidents trophy-winning New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

Meanwhile, the Montreal Canadiens also announced that they placed forward Alex Barré-Boulet on waivers, aiming to loan him to the AHL's Laval Rocket assuming he doesn't get claimed by noon on Monday.

Barré-Boulet, a 2023 member of the 80 point club in the minors, signed a one-year deal worth $775,000 with Montreal back in July. He was lured from the Tampa Bay Lightning organization and the AHL's Syracuse Crunch. He was a healthy scratch in Saturday's Habs 4-1 win over the Ottawa Senators so this assignment will get him ice time.

Adding to the uncertainty in Detroit, veteran netminder Jack Campbell is currently in the NHLPA's Player Assistance Program, but new acquisition Cam Talbot has solidified his spot as the team's main wall after a 42 save shutout in Saturday's 3-0 win over the Nashville Predators. Alex Lyon, who went 21-18-5 last season with a solid 3.05 goals against average and a .904 save percentage, will be the backup.

Husso's struggles last season, limited the 29 year-old to 19 games, and the Wings are hopeful he regains his form and the reset helps him.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out for both Husso and Barré-Boulet as they navigate the early season waters.
