The Calgary Flames have claimed defenseman Joel Hanley off waivers from the Dallas Stars, a move that follows their recent trade of blueliner Chris Tanev to the Stars and uncertainty surrounding Noah Hanifin's future with the team ahead of the trade deadline.
Hanley, aged 32, has played 32 games with the Stars this season, contributing three assists. He had signed a two-year, $1.575 million deal with the Stars in the offseason, carrying a cap hit of $787,500.
Originally picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Montreal Canadiens in 2015, Hanley has accumulated two goals and 27 points in 183 career games spread across the Canadiens, Arizona Coyotes, and Stars.
In another waiver-related move, the Washington Capitals have reclaimed forward Matthew Phillips from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Phillips, aged 25, signed a one-year, $775,000 deal with the Capitals in the offseason but was claimed off waivers by the Penguins on Feb. 16. He has contributed a goal and five points in 30 games split between the Capitals and Penguins.
Phillips was originally drafted 166th overall by the Calgary Flames in 2016.
