Sean Higgins, the suspect in the tragic deaths of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother Matthew, appeared in a New Jersey court Thursday with a new look.

Higgins, who had worn a suicide vest during his initial virtual court appearance on August 30, was seen in court with a bushy goatee. The judge decided to keep him in jail for at least another week and postponed the hearing to determine his pretrial conditions until September 13, according to TMZ.

Higgins faces two charges of death by automobile for hitting Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau with his black Jeep Grand Cherokee while they were biking in Oldmans Township, NJ, on August 29. State police reported that Higgins had a strong smell of alcohol on his breath, failed a sobriety test, and admitted to drinking «five to six» drinks before the crash.

Johnny, 31, and Matthew, 29, were killed just before their sister Katie's wedding, where they were to be groomsmen. Johnny Gaudreau, a well-known NHL winger, left behind his wife Meredith and their two young children. Meredith has shared heartfelt tributes on Instagram, remembering her late husband.

«Thank you for the best years of my life,» Meredith Gaudreau wrote on Instagram alongside a carousel of photos of her and Gaudreau over the years.

«Despite losing you, I am still the luckiest girl in the world to have been yours. I love you so so much,» the grieving wife added.

Fans and mourners have gathered in Columbus, Ohio, and Calgary to honor the brothers, laying flowers and lighting candles in their memory.

Johnny Gaudreau, drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2014, later joined the Columbus Blue Jackets with a significant contract. He was a seven-time All-Star and remembered for his joyful play on the ice.

Both the Flames and Blue Jackets have paid tribute to Gaudreau, celebrating his love for the game and his impact on fans and teammates alike.
