The Maple Leafs had hinted at making significant changes to their roster for the 2024-25 NHL season, but so far, most of those changes have focused on the defense, with signings like Chris Tanev. The lack of new forwards has frustrated fans throughout the summer, but NHL analyst Michael Mazzei thinks he has found the answer.
In a recent article for Leafs Nation, Michael Mazzei explored the NHL free-agent market, searching for budget-friendly additions. He identified Dominik Kubalik, a former top-six winger for the Chicago Blackhawks, as a strong candidate.
As Mazzei points out, the Maple Leafs need to find a replacement for Tyler Bertuzzi, and Kubalik could be the perfect low-cost option. At his peak during the 2019-20 season, Kubalik scored 30 goals and tallied 46 points with the Blackhawks. However, his consistency has been an issue since then, with his point totals slipping in subsequent years. After moving to the Detroit Red Wings, his production improved to around 40-45 points, just shy of his career high. But his most recent season with the Ottawa Senators was disappointing, with just 19 points in 74 games.
Mazzei also suggests that if the Leafs were to sign Kubalik, it could serve as insurance in case Nick Robertson is traded. There have been increasing rumors about Robertson's dissatisfaction and potential trade requests.
With all the speculation, adding a player with Kubalik's track record and potential could soften the blow if Robertson leaves. As the NHL season approaches and quality players become scarcer, the opportunity to add a former 30-goal scorer is something the Maple Leafs should seriously consider.
