Alpharetta Sports & Entertainment (ASE) Group, in partnership with former NHL player turned broadcaster Aaron Carter, issued a public statement on Tuesday outlining their desire to bring an NHL team back to the Atlanta, Georgia area.
Carter, who has been residing in Atlanta since 2009, expressed his confidence in the city's ability to support an NHL team. He mentioned ongoing discussions with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman since 2019 regarding the potential return of an expansion team to the Metro Atlanta market.
Additionally, Carter revealed that the ASE Group has partnered with Fortune 100 company New York Life to develop a multi-use facility in Alpharetta, located approximately 26 miles north of downtown Atlanta.
Atlanta has a history with NHL teams, with the Atlanta Flames joining the league in 1972 and later relocating after eight seasons. Similarly, the Atlanta Thrashers debuted in 1999 but folded in 2011, leading to their relocation and rebranding as the Winnipeg Jets.
This announcement comes amidst other expansion proposals within the NHL. In January, Smith Entertainment Group, owners of the NBA's Utah Jazz, formally requested the league to consider adding a team in Salt Lake City, Utah.
