It's been a few years since we've seen a major Restricted Free Agent (RFA) offer sheet scandal in the NHL.

You might remember the drama between the Montreal Canadiens and the Carolina Hurricanes a few years ago. The Canadiens, led by then-GM Marc Bergevin, signed Hurricanes RFA Sebastian Aho to a hefty five-year, $42 million offer sheet, which the Hurricanes quickly matched. Annoyed by this, the Hurricanes responded by signing Canadiens' young player Jesperi Kotkaniemi to a one-year offer sheet with a $20 signing bonus which is Aho's jersey number.

Since then, it's been quiet for RFAs in the league.

Now, Martin Necas enters the spotlight.

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reports that "a few teams" are considering giving the Carolina Hurricanes forward an RFA offer sheet on July 1st. The Hurricanes are looking to trade Necas but have set a high asking price. Teams might find it cheaper to acquire the Czech forward's rights through RFA compensation instead.

According to LeBrun, Necas is likely aiming for a deal in the $4 million to $6 million annual range, which would require RFA compensation of a 1st round and a 3rd round pick. If a team signs him for under $4.2 million, the compensation would drop to just a 2nd round pick. However, Carolina would almost certainly match that lower offer.

Stay tuned as this offseason could get interesting.
