New York Islanders defenseman Mike Reilly had to be carried off the ice Friday after a heavy hit from Buffalo Sabres forward Jordan Greenway.

The incident took place in the second period during a scramble near the Islanders' net, where Reilly collided with Greenway and took an unexpected, forceful hit against the boards, landing hard on his head as he fell.

Although Greenway's check appeared to be a routine play with no clear intent to injure the result was a frightening scene especially for an Islanders team already struggling without star forward Mathew Barzal. The risk of concussions & head injuries continues to be a major concern in the NHL & this incident adds to the growing list of unfortunate injuries affecting the league.

Reilly currently scoreless this season has built a reputation as a dependable physical player. Over his 10 year career he has accumulated 18 goals & 104 assists having played for several teams including Boston, Montreal, Minnesota, Ottawa, Florida & now New York. His experience & gritty style are valuable to the Islanders defense which now faces the possibility of his extended absence.

Greenway, meanwhile, is in his third season with the Sabres and has also built a solid career as a physical, hard-hitting player with 54 goals and 101 assists. He previously played alongside Reilly in Minnesota during the 2017-18 season.

Stay tuned for more updates on Reilly's status as his condition becomes clearer.
