When Sean Avery received his first NHL paycheck, he didn't buy a car or a house like many other players. Instead, he made an illegal purchase.

A member of the media recently reached out to Sean Avery to ask what he did with his first-ever NHL paycheck. Avery's response was surprising-he admitted that he used it to buy something illegal.

Sean Avery, known for his outspoken and controversial nature, didn't hold back in his response, which was far from family-friendly. His honesty, while shocking, is consistent with the way he played the game-fearless and unapologetic. Local authorities might not appreciate his admission, though.

Avery, now retired at 44, started his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings in the 2001-02 season. He played 580 career NHL games, scoring 90 goals and 247 points, all while building a reputation as one of the league's most notorious pests. He was particularly known for getting under the skin of opposing players and even goalies, most famously Martin Brodeur.

Avery's antics on the ice led to the creation of "The Avery Rule." In a 2008 playoff game against the New Jersey Devils, Avery turned to face goalie Martin Brodeur and waved his arms and stick in front of him to block his view. The tactic worked, and the New York Rangers scored. The NHL responded by quickly implementing a rule banning such behavior, and any player caught doing it would receive a two-minute minor penalty.
