The waiver wire is usually quiet this time of year, but occasionally, players are put on unconditional waivers to terminate their contracts and seek new opportunities in North America or Europe. This happened on Saturday afternoon.
James Mirtle of The Athletic shared on social media that Tampa Bay Lightning forward prospect Ilya Usau has been placed on unconditional waivers to terminate the final year of his contract.
Mirtle also mentioned that Usau is expected to return to the KHL, where he played during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons with Dynamo Minsk, his hometown team in Belarus.
Usau, 22, played 42 games this season for the Lightning's AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. He scored 14 points (seven goals and seven assists), had 14 penalty minutes, and was a plus-12.
It will be interesting to see if Usau returns to North America in the future. He's still young, and if he excels in the KHL, there could be another NHL team interested in him.
