TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger commented on Staios, particularly regarding the Jacob Chychrun trade with the Washington Capitals, which brought back defenseman Nick Jensen and a 2026 third-round pick.
It's possible Staois could have obtained a first and second-round pick for the 26-year-old, but it seems unlikely he would pass up that deal if it was on the table. More likely, the best offer for Chychrun was the one he made with Washington. Trying to get other GMs to offer a better deal might have been his strategy, but what would lying accomplish?
Giving Staois the benefit of the doubt might be wise, but fans and insiders are eager for something to cheer about at the Canadian Tire Centre. It's been a long time since the team was relevant.
Will we ever know what really happened? Doubtful. But if the reports are true, Staois needs to work harder and smarter moving forward.
