Leafs fans got a bit of a surprise today thanks to Jeff Marek making a shocking revelation on 32 thoughts. Apparently the team made a serious offer on former Tampa Bay Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier. Given how long ago this deal would have happened it seems that the details might be murky, but that is not the case. Marek laid out all the pieces that were involved.
It is not clear exactly when this trade offer was made. However, it was definitely when John Tortorella was head coach of the Lightning. Lecavalier and Tortorella famously did not get along too well during his tenure as Tampa Bay Lightning head coach. This means that the trade offer must have been made some time between 2001 and 2008. Notably, the Tampa Bay Lighting won the 2004 Stanley Cup with Tortorella behind the bench and Lecavalier playing a big role on the ice.
Lecavalier would never hoist the Stanley Cup again in his career although he would go on to play in over 1200 games, recording 421 goals and 949 assists in the process.
