Massive trade proposal emerges sending Mitch Marner to a contender per Friedman

A new team has emerged in the trade rumors surrounding forward Mitch Marner of the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Vegas Golden Knights are interested in Marner.
They often pursue top players on the trade market, and this situation is no different. Friedman mentioned that people have suggested potential trades involving Vegas defenseman Shea Theodore and goalie Logan Thompson.
«One of the things with Marner is that a lot of people suspect that Vegas will be around it,» Friedman said on the Leafs Morning Take podcast. «Because Vegas is just smart, they are around any good player. So I got people hypothesizing Shea Theodore and Logan Thompson deals to me, for example.»

Vegas might be considering these trades because they recently extended Noah Hanifin's contract, making Theodore expendable. Additionally, the Golden Knights seem set on Adin Hill as their starting goalie, which could make Thompson available for trade.
Toronto is looking to strengthen its defense, and acquiring Thompson to pair with Joseph Woll is appealing. The Maple Leafs and their general manager, Brad Treliving, are open to offers for Marner. Marner has a $10.9 million annual cap hit and a full no-movement clause, meaning he must approve any trade.
Fitting Marner under Vegas's salary cap would be challenging, even with the cap rising by $4.5 million next season.
While there are many trade rumors, Marner continues to train and prepare for the upcoming season with the Maple Leafs. He had 26 goals and 59 assists, totaling 85 points in 69 games during the 2023-24 season. Marner might finish his current contract with Toronto, but his future in the NHL remains uncertain.
