After rumors of a trade earlier this year were put to bed, Vancouver Canucks GM confirmed that the team will release their top-4 defenseman Nikita Zadorov to free agency.
"The Vancouver Canucks have acquired Nikita Zadorov from the Calgary Flames in exchange for 3rd round draft pick 2026 & 5th round draft pick 2024. Actually, we like this deal from Canucks' perspective (for now). They've added solid No. 4 defenseman for (almost) nothing."
Despite his all-around approval, Big Z was supposedly not set to stay in Vancouver. During the regular season, he was the subject of rumors of a pre-deadline trade, eliciting a response from his agent Dan Milstein.
"Nikita Zadorov was the subject of rumours earlier this week regarding a possible trade from Vancouver.
Zadorov's Agent Dan Milstein (@HockeyAgent1) talked about the rumours and if the goal is still to sign an extension."
Though it was clear Zadorov enjoyed his time in Vancouver, it seems it is now coming to a close. Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin stated that the 6'6" defenseman will enter free agency.
"Vancouver GM Patrik Allvin says Nikita Zadorov will not be re-signing with the Canucks"
Nikita Zadorov was a cornerstone of the Canucks defense and had gained popularity for his bold interview personality. Understandably, fans are in pieces over his inevitable departure.
Though it is sad for Vancouver fans to say goodbye, Nikita Zadorov will undoubtedly still be on the ice somewhere in the NHL. Where that is will have to remain a mystery for the time being.
