While the department of player safety at the NHL level is often used as a punchline for many hockey related jokes, the Canadian junior leagues take dangerous hits extremely seriously. Victoria Royals defenseman Alex Edwards learned this the hard way after he made a very dangerous hit in his most recent game.
Here's a look at the play that got Edwards suspended.
Adam Kierszenblat gives us a little extra context here as well, stating that Edwards was suspended twice last season.
The Royals released a statement regarding the hit, wishing the best for Dexter Whittle. Whittle had to be transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.
Luckily, the Silvertips updated us on this story, releasing this statement regarding the health of their player. While he won't be returning to hockey in the near future, it is good to see he was healthy enough to be released.
