David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins sounded off to the media after head coach Jim Montgomery benched him for the entire third period of a recent game against the Seattle Kraken.
It's unusual to see a star player like Pastrnak benched, which drew a lot of attention. Coach Montgomery made the call in response to a mistake by Pastrnak-a late-second-period turnover in the Bruins' 2-0 win against the Kraken. Although Montgomery didn't say much about the benching, he hinted it was part of holding players accountable in a season where the team has struggled to find momentum.
Pastrnak himself didn't shy away from the incident, acknowledging that his turnover almost cost the team.
"That was a bad turnover. I take responsibility for it. Accountability, I guess, is the best word. I just want to move forward. I don't want to be any distraction to our team. The guys know how I feel about them in here. It was a bad play."
Got to be better. Take responsibility for being better. At the same time, I'm just moving forward today, focusing for another game tomorrow. Yesterday was yesterday. I never look back. Just came in today, worked on my game today."
The turnover gave Kraken forward Yanni Gourde three scoring chances, but goaltender Jeremy Swayman managed to keep them out, helping the Bruins maintain their lead.
Despite the Bruins' early-season struggles, Pastrnak remains a standout performer, leading the team with 6 goals and 5 assists in 13 games. His willingness to take ownership of mistakes speaks to his leadership qualities and shows why he's so respected in the Bruins' locker room.
