Jeff Skinner has been a positive asset for the Buffalo Sabres, but with the team looking to move in a new direction, that could include a buy-out for the veteran.
The Buffalo Sabres have shown promise in the past few years with their young, emerging core, but unfortunately, the results haven't yet followed. It's expected that they will explore major additions in free agency this summer, and now, we may know how they're getting extra cash, with reports emerging that the team are considering a buy-out of Jeff Skinner.
The veteran has three years left on an eight-year, $72 million he signed back before the 2019-20 season, but a buy-out would certainly reduce that cost for Buffalo. After a career resurgence with 63 and 82 points in 2021 and 2022, Skinner took a step back in 2023, and with his age only going up year by year, they are looking to move on before he regresses further.
It's not clear if they've discussed this with Skinner or have concrete plans of when to do this, but for now, it appears as though the Sabres are ready to move on from Jeff Skinner, and it could happen very, very soon.
