Elliotte Friedman drops major news regarding a sign and trade for Jake Guentzel
Jake Guentzel is likely to be involved in a 'sign and trade,' as Elliotte Friedman revealed the Carolina Hurricanes' asking price for his signing rights.
Guentzel, 29, is set to become a free agent on July 1. Currently, only the Hurricanes can re-sign him, but it appears he is interested in testing the market.
This potential parting would be disappointing for the Canes, who paid a hefty price to acquire him at the trade deadline. They sent two draft picks, three prospects, and Michael Bunting to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Guentzel.
If Guentzel doesn't plan on signing with Carolina, the Canes' last option is to trade his signing rights. Elliotte Friedman shared that the Canes are asking for a mid-round pick for Guentzel's signing rights:
Guentzel will surely attract interest from many NHL teams, and acquiring his rights before July 1 is a risk. Therefore, teams will likely want Guentzel to agree on an extension first.
Considering draft order and team needs, the Chicago Blackhawks seem like a perfect destination for him. His experience playing alongside Sidney Crosby would be valuable as the Hawks aim to surround Connor Bedard with top players.
The Blackhawks have eight draft picks in 2024, including six between rounds two and six. Sending one of these picks to the Carolina Hurricanes wouldn't be a significant loss if they can secure Guentzel on a long-term contract.
