The young netminder seemed to be anticipating the puck going into the corner when suddenly it entered the net behind him, much to the surprise of everyone. It seemed as though the goaltender lost sight of the puck after Avalanche defenseman Sam Girard lifted it in from the neutral zone.
Making matters worse is the fact that the Avalanche had just scored literally five seconds prior to the goal. Making it even worse is the fact that both of these goals came with less than a minute left in the period. In fact, they became the fastest two goals scored in Avalanche history.
Some were surprised by the fact that the Hurricanes switched goalies after the first period. However, given how the first period ended, it is reasonable that Rob Brind'Amour would want a change in net.
However, you can't always get what you want. At some point in the second period, Raanta suffered a lower-body injury. While he was able to complete the frame, he did not come out for the 3rd, meaning Kochetkov was back in net.
Oddly enough, the moves worked as the Hurricanes netminders would combine to give up zero goals through the final 40 minutes of the game. Following the contest, Brind'Amour had no update on Raanta's status, noting that he would be re-evaluated tomorrow. Stay tuned for an update on the goaltender's status.
