Corey Perry cleared waivers on Wednesday, allowing the Chicago Blackhawks to proceed with terminating the contract of the veteran forward.
On Tuesday, the Blackhawks shared that they were parting ways with 38-year-old vet Corey Perry. General Manager Kyle Davidson called it a "workplace decision" to remove Perry from the team but didn't go into specifics, saying it was an "internal matter."
Davidson clarified that the Perry situation did not implicate any other players or their families, mentioned that the rumors were "disgusting." The Blackhawks placed Perry on waivers for contract termination six days after benching him for undisclosed reasons.
The incident leading to Perry's removal occurred on November 22, just before a game against the Blue Jackets. He was immediately pulled from the lineup, and the decision to waive him followed an internal investigation.
Perry had joined the Blackhawks in the summer on a one-year, $4-million contract, aiming to provide veteran leadership for the rebuilding team. The four-time NHL All-Star and 2011 Hart Trophy winner as MVP had contributed four goals and five assists in 16 games this season.
