In Jordin Tootoo's recently released book, 'Mind Over Matter,' a particular story has sparked discussions.
Playing for the Chicago Blackhawks at the time, he asked them to place him on LTIR in order to avoid being demoted to the AHL. The then-General Manager, Stan Bowman, reportedly granted Tootoo's request.
Tootoo, who had been re-signed by Chicago in 2017, was eventually put on LTIR due to an upper-body injury, and he retired in October 2018. Tootoo alleges that he made the request to Bowman so that he could remain in Chicago with his pregnant wife.
It's unclear if Tootoo and the Blackhawks bent any NHL rules. But in recent years, many teams were critisized by their use of the LTIR for alleged cap circumvention.
Tootoo earned the league's minimum wage and it would be surprising that the team's intention was to save money by granting his request.
Do you think the NHL should change its rules concerning the LTIR and the salary cap?
