The Columbus Blue Jackets are struggling this year. They were forced to fire their head coach prior to the year even beginning, and now they are at the bottom of the standings. To add to the struggles, their top player Patrik Laine hasn't performed well, and has now been healthy scratched.
Laine signed a massive contract just a few seasons ago, and still has two years left on it. He is significantly underperforming his AAV as of right now.
Head coach Patrick Vincent took to the media to explain the reasoning behind scratching Laine and his response to the decision.
Laine's difficulty this year along with the Blue Jackets' struggles has sparked speculation as to whether or not they should dump Laine's contract and rebuild. Many teams would be willing to take on Laine in hopes of improvement with a change in scenery. Ultimately, this depends on whether or not the Blue Jackets are willing to throw in the towel on Laine and their season.
